LCCAD, CCC, DepEd hosts teachers convergence on K to 12 learning materials

Legazpi City—More than 100 teachers, who acted as writers, critics and facilitators, participated in the two-day convergence for the rewriting, reediting and fine tuning of the K to 12 Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), Disaster Risk and Vulnerability Reduction (DRVR): Learning Materials for Philippine Schools at Sarung Banggui Beach Resort, Sto. Domingo, Albay last April 26-27, 2016.

The project, spearheaded by the Local Climate Change Adaptation for Development (LCCAD), Office of the President – Climate Change Commission (CCC) and the Department of Education (DepEd) Region V, was joined in by the teachers from the teaching divisions of the cities of Legazpi, Tabaco and Ligao.

 

First in Asia

In his opening message last April 26, LCCAD Executive Director Nong Rangasa said that this is the first of its kind in the country. “This is the pilot. This is the first in the country. The first in Asia. Hinahanapan namin sa Asia kung sino na ang may ganitong convergence. Wala, Pilipinas lang. Dito po sa Albay”, Rangasa stated.

“Global warming is upon us. Climate change is real and climate change is happening. Also, it is a major threat to our economic, social and even cultural development. And also, we cannot attain or achieve the Sendai Framework 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals 2030”, he added.

Director Rangasa informed the teachers that the two-day convergence between writers and critics was due to the request of both groups during the meetings during the past months. He also said that the confab was a good way for the writers to meet the expectation of the critics and vice versa.

 

Teachers provide full project support

Members of the critiquing team laid out their comments on the learning materials made by the writers on the first day of the confab. Some of which include the lack of graphic design and the use of technical words which would not be easily understood by young learners. Also, one of the issues raised was the format of the learning materials submitted by the writers. The writers and critics were grouped together based on their tasked subject after the opening program and were supervised by the project facilitators chosen by DepEd. The subjects are araling panlipunan, english, filipino, math and science

The next day, the teachers presented samples of the crafted learning materials to the participants for critiquing and comments. Some of the presented learning materials were deemed “student friendly” and were praised by Director Rangasa, the co-participants and facilitators.

The teachers were also a given a chance to provide their impressions and remarks on the subject. Some told that they need more time.  The other teachers talked about their positive insights on the K to 12 CCA learning materials project.

“The coordinated mechanism to organize this face-off can be described in one word: awesome. I am impressed with the critics and facilitators who made us re-think and reach for our scholarly goals to make them viable to our learners. For that, I thank you and will always be forever grateful”, Mr. Vic D. Adlaon shared.

“Sir Nong was able to develop our skills and talents. Aside from that, we were able to discover our talent; na meron din pala tayong talent sa writing”, Mrs. Anne Matagñob said.

“It is really overwhelming and challenging to be chosen as one of the critics [and] to refine the work of these gifted, talented and humble writers of Albay. The task is brain-racking and stressful but we enjoyed sharing our knowledge, time and efforts [knowing] that we will be part of this humungous undertaking”, expressed by Ms. Hilda Dacillo.

Director Rangasa informed the teachers that he will make sure that the learning materials will be implement on their own schools. “I’ll see to it na kayong mga writer teachers mismo ang magdedemo on your own school”, he added.

The teachers, facilitators and LCCAD staff were joined in by graphic artists thru the help of Prof. Adrian Aguilar of Bicol University (BU). The graphic artists, who are recent graduates of BU, will design the illustrations and graphics of the learning materials.

 

AKB Rep. Batocabe, CCC Sec. de Guzman, Albay Rep. Gonzalez, DepEd RD Abcede assures project support

Ako Bicol Party list Representative Rodel M. Batocabe, visited the teachers during the reediting of the learning materials on the first day of the convergence. Batocabe shared about the visit of the French Prime Minister in the country which prompted the national government to establish the committee on climate change and how he was elected as chair of the Committee on Climate Change. The party list representative, who is also the chairperson on the House of Representatives Special Committee on Climate Change, also provided his insight and plans for the K to 12 CCA learning materials.

I do hope na ilalagay na natin yan sa mga bata. Ilalagay na natin sa psyche ng mga bata na ito na po ang pag-asa natin. So that they will not commit the same mistakes that we have committe”, he expressed.

“I’m so proud when Nong Rangasa told me that you are the first, the pioneers to do these things. This instructional material is for the next contribution of Filipinos. I am so proud you are making history”, Batocabe said.

During the introduction of the project earlier this year, CCC Secretary Emmanuel M. de Guzman expressed his full support for the project. During his visit in Legazpi last February, de Guzman noted how the CCA projects of LCCAD and other partner agencies were pioneered in Albay and were adapted by other local government units (LGUs) in the country.

Albay 3rd District Representative Fernando V. Gonzalez, in an interview this year, assured his full commitment to CCA projects in the province in cooperation with LCCAD, CCC and DepEd. He also pointed out that one of his advocacies is educating the youth and the future generations as a significant element of a new strategy to embed climate change adaptation in the country’s educational system.

DepEd Regional Director Ramon Fiel Abcede, during the project orientation early 2016, expressed that the participation of the teachers was due to the workshop in 2008 where they would come up with the first-of-its-kind convergence on CCA and DRVR learning materials. He stated that this would be a sequel to the lesson exemplars produced in the past by DepEd and the group of LCCAD and CCC. (GremilAlexisNaz/LCCAD)
